How to choose good Hockey and Skates equipment

Skating for fun or to take part in an ice hockey game: this is a great classic of our Quebec winters.

How to choose good skates.

Before buying them, think about the skill level and how often your child will use the equipment. Fancy skating or ice hockey? Seasoned skater or beginner?

Skates should be chosen about a size and a half below your child's usual shoe size. Try them out carefully, as you also need to allow for the space of a finger in anticipation of small, growing feet.

How to choose a skate or hockey helmet.

It must stay firmly in place and follow the child's movements. Also ensure that your child finds it comfortable. It is best to try several different models. Consider a balaclava or toque without a pompom to wear underneath.

How to choose hockey gloves.

IIt is preferable to leave a small space at the fingertips, but you should anticipate that the gloves will expand slightly over time. Gloves that are too large will make it difficult to grip the stick.

How to Choose the right shin guards.

The shin guard must be well aligned, and the knee must fit in the right place. Ask for advice, as the length of the shin guard differs depending on how the player wears it. Other protective gear should also be considered: elbow pads, neck guard, underpants, goalie equipment... Don't forget that you will need to carry all this equipment. Think of an adapted transport bag.

How to Choose a hockey Stick.

Consider whether your little player prefers a stiffer or more flexible stick. As for height, the stick should come up to the player’s nose when not wearing skates. With skates on, the stick should be between the mouth and chin.

A few tips:

  • Remember to have the skates sharpened as the season progresses, especially if you alternate between outdoor and indoor rinks, as the blades wear differently on different surfaces.
  • Also consider getting an anti-odour spray for all this equipment.
