Paddleboard
As the sun rises over a quiet lake, along a winding river or on moving waters, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) invites you to embrace freedom, balance, and reflection. The idea is simple: stand tall on a board, paddle in hand, and let yourself glide across the water, carried by a sense of escape.
The SUP is now very accessible thanks to its quick and easy learning curve, but don't be fooled by the peaceful nature of this outdoor activity, which will challenge your sense of balance and a large proportion of your muscle groups. Let's take a look at the essential considerations for choosing your future boating partner!

When starting out in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), it's best to choose a board that is wide, stable, and easy to maneuver to help you learn balance more easily. Inflatable boards are especially popular with beginners due to their light weight, comfortable footing, and convenient transport and storage.
To get the most out of your sessions, it's important to be well equipped. When purchasing, be sure to consider the following questions in mind :

Several types of boards exist on the market, which makes this sport suitable for everyone. Although performance-oriented professional athletes are more likely to opt for the rigid board, the vast majority of people who practise SUP as a recreational sport will choose an inflatable board because of its ease of storage and flexibility.
Find out how to properly inflate and deflate your paddleboard:
| Criteria | Packs into a carrying bag, ideal for travel and transport. | Requires straps or a roof rack for the car. |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Compact, perfect for small spaces. | Needs careful storage in a larger space. |
| Weight | Lightweight and easy to carry. | Generally heavier. |
| Impact resistance | Resistant to shocks (rocks, shores) thanks to its flexible structure, but it's possible to tear or scratch the SUP. | May scratch or crack more easily. |
| Stability | Generally stable due to its width and volume, but may feel less stable in windy conditions. | Good stability, depending on the model and paddler’s size. |
| Performance (glide, speed) | Softer surface for recreational use. | Better glide, increased rigidity and ideal for speed. |
| Setup time | About 10 minutes to inflate. | Ready to use immediately. |
| Durability | Very durable if properly maintained and stored in a dry, shaded place. | Long life, low risk of deformation. |
| Price | Generally more affordable. | More expensive, especially for high-performance models. |
| Best for... | Beginners, travelers, families, SUP yoga, and frequent outings thanks to easy transport. | Athletes seeking performance and speed over longer distances. |
SUP yoga is a sport that combines traditional yoga with the challenge of balancing on the water. To practice this sport, it's best to opt for a wide, thick, inflatable board that floats well. Find out more in the full article on SUP yoga.
SUP for Children (approximately 7 feet): Some models have been specially designed for children so that they too can enjoy the water. They allow kids to manoeuvre easily and get a great force to speed ratio.
Short boards (less than 10 feet): for smaller users or those looking for more manoeuvrability.
Medium board (between 10 and 12 feet): The most flexible and can be used for any type of activity including yoga. Can easily carry up to 2 adults depending on the weight of the individuals and its maximum load.
Long board (More than 12 feet): Ideal for long trips to have more space to bring extra equipment (food or other items).
It is important to consider the load capacity. That is, the weight of the user and the passenger (adult, child, or pet), if applicable. This information is found in the specifications of the board and it is important not to exceed this figure, in order to enjoy optimal buoyancy and movement.
Whether you're a beginner, a SUP yoga enthusiast, or a fan of long-distance paddling adventures, Sports Experts offers a selection of local brands. Onata, McKinley, Deep River, and Aqua Marina provide paddle boards that combine quality, performance, and accessibility.

Most paddleboards come with a carry bag, an adjustable paddle, a hand pump and a repair kit.
It's important to choose a paddle that's right for you and your height. Also, for optimal performance, it is recommended that non-adjustable paddles reach your wrist when you are standing with your arms raised above your head. The end of the paddle should be well above your head.
SUP paddles are generally made of aluminum, fiberglass or carbon.
| Material | Weight | Performance | Durability | Best for... |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Heavy | Low to moderate | Very good | Beginners and occasional use. |
| Fiberglass | Medium | Good | Good | Regular paddlers looking for a well-balanced option. |
| Carbon | Very light | Excellent (very responsive) | Good to very good | Ideal for long distances and performance-focused outings. |
If you want a higher-end paddle than the one that comes with your SUP, look for Onata paddles, especially their fiberglass and carbon paddle with the double blades or the T-tip option.

The leash does not always come with the SUP. It is recommended to use one when practising the sport on water with more current or simply to give you extra security. Leashes are comfortable and can be attached to your ankle and to the anchor on the back of the SUP. They are stretchable and long enough to allow the user who has fallen into the water to return to the boat safely and easily.

Now that you've found the board that suits you best, you shouldn't overlook the accessories that complement your sport :
PFD (Personal Flotation Device): If you're going sailing on your own, it's essential to carry a flotation jacket (compulsory at all times), a waterproof pouch for your mobile phone or a waterproof bag for your belongings on board. If you're bringing along your canine companion, we recommend that you buy a PFD adapted for him or her, for your pet's safety as well as yours.
Safety whistles and lighting accessories: Essential accessories that we recommend for any outing on the water. Include a safety whistle and lighting accessories if you are going out to SUP after sunset.
Electric Pumps: Although your board comes with a manual pump, you can save time with an electric pump, especially if you own more than one SUP or will be paddling with several people.
Tensioners (Elastic cords): These elastic cords hold water bottles and dry bags to keep your belongings dry.
According to Government of Canada regulations, wearing a PFD (personal flotation device) and carrying a safety whistle are mandatory when paddle boarding. Additionally, a rescue floating rope is recommended for this activity.

Clean after each use: Whether you're paddling in fresh or salt water, it's important to clean your SUP after each outing and before switching bodies of water to avoid transferring microorganisms. A simple rinse is insufficient. It's important to use a biodegradable soap. Salt, sand and debris can accumulate and damage materials over the long term.
Dry before storing: Allow your board to dry completely before folding (for inflatable models) or storing. Residual moisture can promote mold, especially if the board is stored in a carry bag.
Occasional deep-cleaning: Once or twice a season, clean your board with a mild soap or a product specially formulated for nautical materials. Avoid abrasive products that could damage surfaces.
Store out of direct sunlight: Prolonged sun exposure can degrade the outer coating of your board. Store it in a cool, dry place. For rigid SUPs, avoid leaving them on the ground or leaning on the nose.
Check valves and seams (inflatable SUPs): Inspect seams, valves and crease areas regularly. In case of a small leak, use the tightening key included in the repair kit.
By following all of our care recommendations, you'll extend the life of your SUP. Of course, the board’s lifespan depends on its type, how often it's used, and how well it's maintained. In general, a rigid SUP can last over 10 years, while an inflatable model lasts an average of 7 years, depending on build quality and usage.
