Fatbike: How to choose the right equipment this winter

Content developed in partnership with Vifamagazine.ca, December 2020.

Riding on two wheels on snow-covered surfaces has become more possible in recent years with the rise in popularity of fatbike, also known as cycling with oversized tires. Do you want to join in on the fun this winter?

How to choose the right equipment

The Bike

Apart from warm clothes (but not too many, as the activity is very cardio intensive!) and a helmet, the one used in the summer might do the trick, all you need for fatbiking is, of course... the bike itself!

Originally designed for riding on sand, this bike has the advantage of not sinking too deep into the snow. Its key characteristic is the width of its tires, which can measure between 4 and 6 inches, and sometimes more. Tire pressure is also reduced to keep the bike on the surface of the snow. The frame of these bikes is necessarily broader. As a result, it's not possible to transform your summer bike into a winter bike, but it is possible to use your fatbike in the summer.

In terms of the height of the bike, for both adults and children: choose the same size as the one you used in the summer.

Given that the bike is quite expensive, renting it could also be a good option.

Is fatbike suitable for children?

This demanding sport is not for all children. To accommodate toddlers, it is possible to install a convertible child seat, sled or pram for skiing on a snow bike.

Slow and steady for your first time

For your first outings in fatbike with your family, aim for areas offering easy level trails, i.e. with short distances, relatively flat relief and no sharp turns. The tracks should also be free of obstacles, such as trees, and should include hard-packed snow. Little by little, as you gain a little more experience, you will enjoy venturing out on undergrowth trails.
