Essential Tips for a successful winter hike

It goes without saying that to get the most out of winter, nothing beats moving around and enjoying the outdoors. A good introduction to winter sports is to start with short one-day hikes. With the right gear for the activity you choose, you'll feel good, and you'll enjoy your winter outings even more!

When practising a medium to high intensity activity such as winter hiking, the multi-layer system is the ideal way to make outdoor outings enjoyable and comfortable..

The Multi-layer System

The first layer should preferably be made of synthetic fabrics or merino wool. Cotton should be avoided at all costs as it retains moisture and will make you feel cold during the day.

As a second layer, put on a down jacket or an insulated jacket such as ATOM LT from Arc'teryx. It will keep you warm and you can take it off if you get too hot or just keep this second layer on, you can adjust everything according to the weather.

As a third and final layer, we suggest a good GORE-TEX shell like Beta LT from Arc'teryx that will protect you from the cold, wind and snow.

When hiking, you ideally want to be neither too hot nor too cold when you step outside.

The layers can then be adjusted as needed by removing a layer as you exert more energy.

For the legs, we suggest pants like the Softshell Gamma LT from Arc'teryx to which you can add a lined legging underneath for extra warmth, depending on the chosen hike and the weather. For longer hikes, a GORE-TEX snow pant will provide good protection against the elements.

Above all, do not forget to cover your exposed body parts properly, especially the head which makes you lose a lot of heat when uncovered. Besides, it is better to plan ahead and bring two pairs of gloves or mittens, a warmer pair that you try to keep dry and a lighter pair to put on as soon as you begin to heat up.

Finally, there is nothing like investing in good winter boots that will ensure warmth and comfort during your hiking and snowshoeing outings. Put on a good merino wool or synthetic sock inside your boot to keep you warm all day long.

Here are a few hiking essentials that can be included in the tour, such as:

  • studs (to attach to your boots when the trail becomes icy)
  • trekking poles
  • a small light backpack
  • a bottle of water or a thermos with a hot drink
  • a few snacks
  • a headlamp (it is better to be prepared for the early darkness in winter)
  • a few hand warmers to warm hands or feet when needed

We tested and approved this multi-layered system during a day hike on a section of the Chute Neigette / Mont-Comi National Trail, located in the Bas Saint-Laurent. Despite the humidity, it was a successful outing and the benefits of outdoor activity in the winter months were evident in our smiles on the way home.

No need to be afraid of the cold when you have the right gear for your winter hike. You will find the best combination of outfits when you test them during your different outings.

On that note, stay warm and enjoy wonderful winter hikes!
